Saw a few people on my tlist doing writing ask memes and decided to give it a try while I'm procrastinating on...everything (oops)

Date: 2018-12-14 10:14 am (UTC)Ooooh, this is a good question! I tend to be into a lot of stuff that's heavy on the intrigue/espionage and I love characters who are chessmaster manipulator types (Hello there Havelock Vetinari!) so I was dying to write Nirvana in Fire fic, but Mei Chang Su is way smarter than I am tbh. And it's not the 'The show is telling you I have 7 PHDs but I still act like a dumbass' type smart, but something that is visibly proven through Mei Chang Su's knowledge of classical literature, his political maneuvering, his ability to read a situation. I think I've only written from his POV once, but it was super stressful because MCS isn't just great at manipulating his opponents, he's also incredibly unreliable, to the point where he's lying quite a bit even to himself! Trying to get in his head and write from his perspective was really tricky, idk if I'd be up for it a second time.

I'm so 1000% in the tank for this lord-vassel-esque dynamic, because it contains two elements I love to pieces: 1) Unlike Ye Olde lord-vassalage situation there's a deliberate act of choice here, with the Lionheart part of the pairing trusting themselves and their service only to the Lord they deem worthy of wielding them. 2) The stakes in these types of dynamics always are interesting to me, because they're on one level personal and romantic, but there's always this attached sense of a service to something larger--a kingdom, a cause, etc. I really enjoy that added tension!

Date: 2018-12-16 02:17 pm (UTC)AHHH THIS QUESTION IS REALLY EXCITING TO ME I want to write everything tbh!! I have two projects in particular though that I'm hype for: a Persuasion AU with a slow-burn, and a CLAMP fic that's a straight-up sex farce. The Persuasion AU is really challenging because it needs to be FRAUGHT with tension. Every time they look at each other should be agonizing!! But a lot of things can't be expressed directly, and one character in particular doesn't even say much, so it's hard to build that dynamic. The sex comedy is difficult because, well, sex + comedy...It's been fun so far to see how I can take the situation and keep twisting more jokes into it, though. I have the general outline done, but each scene is me just cackling thinking about ways to make things more ridiculous, haha!

I really enjoy them as a device, because they're a bit like riddles, and it's a fun challenge to think of inventive ways to dissolve them. They're also quite flexible; you can use a curse to set the allowed parameters of magic/behaviors, or you can use it as a 'because magic lol' type of smashcut to the particular scenario you want to set up.
