Yuletide Recs 2018
Hello from the frozen North! I've been a bit MIA travelling home for Christmas, doing family things, and playing with the dog as much as possible, oops. I somehow managed to miss the main Yuletide posting (Y I K E S @ MYSELF HOW DID THIS HAPPEN) but I did slip a treat into the Madness collection just under the wire even if I'm not entirely happy with it :/ I'm feeling INCREDIBLY spoiled by the 3!!!!!!!!!! whole gifts!!!!!! I got, and by the fics on offer this year, so here's some of the stuff I read and loved! I'll go back and edit the authors once they've been revealed~
Gift 1) Doing Good When Having Fun by GotTheSilver, Ocean's 8, Deb/Lou/Daphne 3k
I have a difficult time forming sentences to describe this fic that aren't just: HOTT. LOU WEARS A STRAP-ON. Do I need anything else? Not really, but there is really wonderful characterization for all three women, and watching them come together in a way that feels organic to their characters is equally delightful as the flaming hot smut.
Gift 2) drink a case of you by burkesl17, Guardian, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan 2.4k
Very sweet smut, where Shen Wei has had enough of holding back, and decides to throw himself into this thing with ZYL. He's also very bossy about it, which I deeply appreciate, and ZYL is as charming and disarming as ever.
Gift 3) As a Shrike to Your Thorn by DachOsmin, Ocean's 8, Lou/Deb 5.7k
IT'S OCEANS 8, BUT FAE!!!!!!!!! OCEANS EIGHT + FAE + LESBIANS!!!!!!!!! LESBIAN FAE CATE BLANCHETT!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE BEEN SCREAMING ABOUT THIS FOR 10000000 YEARS AND I MAY NEVER STOP!!!!!!!!!
Rec 1) this is not a parallel but a reversal by segfault, The Queen's Thief, Attolia/Gen 2k
The Queen's Thief has always seemed like such a daunting fandom to write for, because MWT has such a specific style, and her characters are so beautifully complex, especially Attolia. This fic does a really nice job at adding a missing scene from Attolia's perspective that fits neatly with her characterization, and the complicated emotions she'd definitely have surrounding a second marriage. I also enjoyed Gen, who was used very sparingly and to good effect!
Rec 2) To Be Known by enjambament, Society of Gentlemen & Band Sinister, Richard/David, Silas/Dom, Lord Corvin/John Raven, 24k
The crossover I never knew I needed????? A 24k masterpiece where the Ricardians join forces with The Murder to stop a blackmailer. It has such a deft handle on tone and character voice that it reads like sequel, and the relationship dynamics, especially between Silas, Dom, and John Raven, are just as lovely and layered as they are in canon. Prety much all the canon couples from both works get a shoutout here, but the primary focus is on the three couples listed above, with one scene of John/Silas/Dom. ANYWAY, what I'm failing to say in any eloquent way is that it's an absolute joy of a fic if you like either of these books, please go read it!!
Rec 3) next spring and her jubilant shout by betony, Spinning Silver Irina/Mirnatius 2.4k
A short exploration of Irina and Mirnatius' realtionship after the events of canon, which I thought did an excellent job of developing Mirnatius since his character was left with an open ending. I think the way this author developed both characters was believable, but Irina especially was fun to read (she was my favorite of the three protagonists in the book) A good solid fic if you're looking for more from this universe!
Rec 4) Because you're here by sakuramacaron, Gekan Shojo Nozaki-kun, Seo/Waka, 2k
Seo drags Waka to a Love Hotel because curiosity and because she's Seo and can never do things like a normal human being I guess. There are shenanigans--and by shenanigans I mean fuzzy handcuffs--and the tone is blase and funny. I really liked this author's take on Seo!
Rec 5) Spider Man: Junior Prom by kormantic, Spiderman Homecoming, Queer Eye RPF, gen, 2.2k
This fic is RIDICULOUSLY cute--The Queer Eye cast helps Peter Parker get ready for his junior prom--and the voices for each of the cast members is so funny and spot-on that I devoured this whole story with a big grin on my face. (Antoni is going to PROVE his cooking skills goddammit!) Not two canons I would have ever thought to bring together, but such is the magic of Yuletide!!!
Rec 6) lineaments by sea_changed, Society of Gentlemen, Silas/Dom 2.8k
This fic isn't a particularly feel-good fic, but I think it captures Silas and Dom's dynamic in a way that feels very faithful to the characters. Silas/Dom is a difficult pairing to write for, because they love each other but that doesn't ever make things easy for them, and there's this tension they have that I think is really hard to get right when it's not coming directly from KJC's brain. However, I do like that this fic has Dom giving Silas a hard no on something they try--it's interesting to see them work through things from that angle, because I don't think it's something we see in canon.
Rec 7) cut and run by Corlaire, Hawkeye Comics, America/Kate 5.5k
This fic really has the feel of the Hawkeye comics nailed down! I love all the banter between Clint and Kate, and the conversations between Clint and America had great emotions woven into them. The whole fic felt really settled into the world of the comics, I enjoyed it a lot!
