Fan Rec Friday 9: Check Yourself Before You Rec Yourself
The TV Show:
1. London Spy
This is both a rec and a bat signal for other fans to come watch this show and scream with me because WHAT THE FUCK? wAS THAT ENDING? THIS IS THE FIRST EPISODE????
*ahem* Yes. So. London Spy is a miniseries airing on BBC2 and starring Ben Wishaw (aka Q) as a man who gets roped into some serious shit after his torrid love affair with Edward Holcroft's character. Well, it's not really torrid, at the time- it's actually quite a moving relationship between two men who seem genuinely lonely and are seeking intimacy and understanding. Yep, you read that right! This is indeed a Cannonical Gay Spy Show With Actual Fleshed-Out Characters And Yes They Even Show The Sex Scenes.Shameless US I'm looking at you. Viewers should heed the warnings though, there are some darker elements in the story and again this is only the first episode. I've linked to an episode recap above, and if you like what you see come join me in this hole. I've got snacks.
The Fics:
1. Concerto for Two Violins by lady_ragnell (Merlin) 18k, Gwaine/Morgana & Merlin/Arthur
Morgana and Gwaine are friends with benefits and maybe feelings, Arthur an Merlin are too dramatic for their own good, and everyone plays in the Camelot Orchestra. This is such a fun AU! The author clearly has experience playing in an orchestra and all their characters have definite opinions on the music, which is a suitably large part of this fic. Morgana is the main character, which is a nice outside POV to all Arthur and Merlin's drama happening in the background.
2, Honey, You're Familiar by tachycardia (1D) 8k, Zayn/Liam
GAH. This fic is so romantic, but in such small ways! Post-breakup of One Direction Liam and Zayn are pursuing their own careers in their own spaces and decide to reconnect. It's not flashy or dramatic, it's just two people making a conscious choice to seek each other out and have a relationship. Except this time it's all about doing it on their own terms and not because they were thrown together by music producers, which really makes all the different. It's just so warm, and lovely, and loving, I smile every time I read it.
3. A Language of it's Own (It Talks to Me In Tiptoes) by chatona (Genkill) 12k, Brad/Nate
An AU where Nate never went to the marines, but he and Brad meet anyways after Ray quits the service and decides to start a band. This fic is really...I don't know if quiet is the right word? Understated, maybe. It subverts drama where you think there will be drama. Everyone in the story feels like an adult making adult decisions, but there's still tension and it's still compelling. Brad pines a lot, in a way that he tries to pretend isn't pining and Nate is magnificently Nate. This is another one I keep in my dropbox to read on the bus.
The Videos:
1. Missy Elliott - WTF (Where They From) ft. Pharrell
I realized that about 80% of my favorite dance videos are Missy Elliott videos (seriously, Gossip Folks is a classic for a reason) Words cannot express how happy I am that she's back and making music in 2015. Now if only she and Nicki would do a track together I could die happy.
2. Renee Kester & Phillip Chbeeb - Slip
Honestly the most breathtaking choreography I've seen in ages. I've probably watched this video fifty times, and each time I watch it I'm picking out something new in their routine and going 'no that's my favorite!' The physicality of both dancers is incredible, and the song by Elliott Moss fits perfectly.
3. The Postmodern Jukebox Channel
This group rearranges modern pop songs like Seven Nation Army and I Believe In A Thing Called Love so that the vocal styles and backing instrumentals are that of 1920's, 30's, and 40's jazz singers. I'm consistently a sucker for new and interesting covers, and PMJB never fails to disappoint. Their vocalists always look like they're having a blast, and it's a fun way to explore different subgenres of older music.
